A Dark Day

The clouds seemed to glide as they gently blanketed the rising sun. I scan from the left to the right, looking for any clouds that formed distinct shapes. A dense yet blinding light illuminated the dampened sky, bringing the shapes into perspective. One looked similar to a man; he looked distressed and angry with a killer eye. He glided a certain way, as if clouds were drifting through his mind.  I felt goose bumps caress my body; slithering through the pores of my dry skin. I snap my head behind, hearing screeching cries from vultures at an accident nearby. The cries were filled with agony and shock, like tortured banshees locked away. The constant flaps of the vultures accompanied by the rising red sun made me realize how it could have been me. I somehow felt as if the man and the accident were connected.  My strange vibes locked me standing on the hill, as if wanting me to take a closer look at the man.

Scared now, I feel the urge to call my sister over and tell her about the accident. I quickly run over to my house and ring the doorbell. Time seemed to lengthen as I waited attentively for an answer. Moments pass and I start to feel uneasy from the wails nearby. My sister opens the door and heaves a sigh. She looked sleepy and had inflated sacs under her eyes. Her straight blond hair was now twisted and prickly, strands flying in every direction. Her face slumped and was in perfect unison with her body. Unlike myself, my sister tried to sleep in during the long mornings. She never appreciated the light wispy sun and instead enjoyed long and distasteful games on her with her dolls In contrast, once the sun had risen, I would bolt out and run around freely and without care. After I was tired, I would sit down and watch the clouds as they slowly drifted past. She was like the moon and I was the sun.
Although she had the fortitude to do activities during the day, she was often reluctant and instead stayed home playing with her dolls. I goaded her to practice staying in the sun but after only a brief amount of time, she would tire and go back inside. Her hate for the daytime hours is as immutable as my love for them.

The door produced a cacophony as my sister stepped outside. The house is only two years old but the sudden change in temperature made the wood crisp and dry. She walked dozily and tripped on small pieces of wood. I reached in to help her regain her balance but was interrupted by a booming roar of engines. The accident nearby had become colossal and was building up with corpses and blown cars. The vultures were still watching; disgusted, but intrigued by the shocking accident that they were not in. My sister put her hands over her mouth, aghast and horrified by the river of blood that sneaked the road. I hugged my sister and tried to comfort her but I knew she would not be feeling better any time soon. I tried to push her mind away from the scene by making intriguing faces, yet her mind seemed to be locked onto the unfortunate people close by.

Mother would know what to do. She was always able to get my sister’s face to shine, regardless of the situation. I remembered how she used to buy ice-cream for her, almost lighting her plump cheeks immediately. I then realized that there was an ice-cream shop a few miles from here. Quickly, I grabbed my sister and rushed her to the car. I told her that we were going to go visit mom. I could not help but sneak a guilty chuckle as I felt excited to show her my plans. Before driving away, I caught a glimpse of a tall man on top of the hills. He looked strangely familiar.
Downtown is huge. Its huge towers enclosed us in like a tight cage. People skittered everywhere, eager to return to their families after a long day of work. I reach into my pocket and find five dollars, just enough for two ice-cream cones. My sister buys a chocolate cone and I buy a strawberry cone. We slurp the tasty sphere, happily savoring the delicious jolt of delight. We then wander around aimlessly, listening to the sweet chirps of mockingbirds and breathing the crisp fresh air.

My watch beeped eight o’clock but I took little notice. The night had become absolutely perfect and I want to spend every second of it with my sister. We watch the night sky light up as fireworks shoot up into the stale night. Myriads of blues, oranges, and reds all dance in unison and perfection as they competed for spotlight under the glorious moon. The fireworks would race to the sky then explode, stinging my fragile ears. The small flecks would then hang in defeat as they slowly dropped from the evanescent sky. I listen closely to the crackling boom of fireworks as I gently close my eyes. We lose track of time as we stare at the beautiful explosions. My sister and I calmly let sleep devour us whole as fireworks illuminate the sky, reflecting our innocent faces, free from any harm.

A quiet but startling shuffle jolts me awake. I look to my watch, nine o’clock. Worried and surprised, I nudge my sister awake. She gives a weak smile and flops down to the ground, shaking the earth. A distant but steadily moving shadow catches my attention. It belongs to a tall man that appears to be around his early forties. He wore a large round hat that covered most of his face and had long spiky boots. My curiosity is quickly watered down by fear as he moves closer and closer to me and my sister. I frantically wake my sister up and tell her that there is a man moving towards us. We both run in short bursts trying to flee from the mysterious tall man. My heart pounds in harmony with my shortened breath and before long, I need to catch my breath. I look back, wondering if we lost the tall man. He is nowhere to be seen so I rest for a few moments.

Wondering where the man had went, I suddenly feel a spiking pain in my lower temple. Warm copper blood slides from my head and I brush it away. Feeling dizzy, I try to muster enough energy to warn my sister, but she too, has been hit down by the tall man. The world looks like a twirl of madness. I can see images popping back and forth, some are happy images, others are sad. I feel dreamy and light as I view the world high above, like an eagle. There are chocolates, the size of giant sea turtles and ballerinas dancing like mad wolves. Everything seems odd and strange. I eventually give in to the strange images, and fall into a deep slumber to a mysterious and deluded world.

Holding Back

I want to hold you close
but I am too scared to love
I feel a bit of hope; something
Somewhere up above

I feel so far away
as if love is a sin
You'll light me for a while
Then blow me away again

I dream and hope of your calm soft touch
It's sweet caress, soft but strong too
I really don't know what to do
My sky's full of only you
